Deep fakes and the Artificial Intelligence Act—An important signal or a missed opportunity?

This course examines how the European Union’s Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) addresses the regulation of deep fakes. As the first legal framework to define and regulate deep fakes, the AI Act establishes transparency obligations aimed at mitigating their harmful use. While the Act marks significant progress, it leaves important gaps—particularly in cases such as nonconsensual deep fake pornography. Through a critical analysis of the legal provisions, the course explores the rationale behind the chosen regulatory approach, its limitations, and the broader implications of the AI Act for the future landscape of deep fake governance.
